une de mes dernières soirées passées à Vienne, voilà bien longtemps, mai 1987….comme d’habitude je revenais de mon café préféré du coin, Raimund International, pris quelques pintes, joué aux échecs avec quelques habitués de la place, et le serveur, pris une dernière en compagnie du patron Raimund, je m’en retournais au bed & breakfast qui m’a servi de logement pendant les quatre mois passés là-bas, et cette vitrine capta mon attention, mon appareil-photo, jamais trop loin de moi dans ces années là, mon fidèle ami, un pentax K-1000, croqua cette image nocturne d’une vitrine, que je voyais en talbleau, c’était voilà bientôt 30 ans de cela, un jour ce sera un tableau, on doit se garder des projets pour nos vieux jours, pense que j’ai déjà plus de projets que de vieux jours devant moi…:), j’imagine que je dois me dire qu’il est temps de me remettre au boulot, peindre, dessiner, souriller….avec ma tablette et me trouver un nouvel ami, un Nikon, Canon ou autre appareil numérique de meilleure qualité…:)

One of the last night spent in Vienna, my adoption city for 4 months in 1987…as usual, I was coming back from the coffee, where I had a few pints, spent the night drinking, playing chess, I was probably holding alcohol better than my friends-opponent (chess speaking…) because I won a lot of game coming back from behind, after a last one with those friends, the bar owner Raimund, the coffee bear his name Raimund International, the waiter Andy, his girl friend, Christine, , and a few others, I was coming back to my temporary place for those months, a nice pension held by Khaled and his wife, a nice polish woman, can’t remember her name, anyhow, not important, I saw that store showcase, and make a night shot with my faithful friend at that time, my beloved Pentax K-1000, and I was probably thinking, I will make a painting of that, it’s been close to 30 years, still a project…for my older days to come…:) The problem I think I have too many projects for the number of old days left…so I guess I have to get back working hard on my paintings and other things…pastel, photos, illustrations….:) and getting a new faithful friend, don’t know if it will be a Nikon, Canon or another type of numeric camera…

Le château du Belvedère/Belvedere Castle. Vienne, 1986-12;#107-02_1986-12-xx-R

Tirée d’une de mes trop peu nombreuses photos de Vienne, pourtant j’y ai passé quatre mois…probablement plus occupé à fréquenter mon café favori, prendre des cours de dessin et de peinture, et aussi un peu d’allemand, mais tout-de-même, j’en ai quelques-unes, celle-ci fait plus carte postale que  la  plupart de mes photos, le château du Belvedère, magnifique site. j’aurais peut-être photographié un peu plus si j’avais passé du temps en été ou au printemps, plutôt que de début janvier à mi-mai 1987, après un premier séjour d’une dizaine de jours fin novembre, mais cela ne m’empêche habituellement pas d’en faire de la photo…donc  ma presque carte-postale du château du Belvedère.

From my too short library of Vienna picture, I spent more than four months there, 10 days end of November and from early January to mid May in 1986-1987…I guess I was too busy discovering my favorite café, taking art classes in drawing and painting, and learning a bit of German, but here’s one of the few, almost a postcard, I don’t have many of this type in my collection, the Belvedere Castle, a beautiful site, I should have taken more pic, maybe it has to do with spending my time there in Winter instead of another season, but usually this is not the kind of thing that would prevent me from taking photos…so my so called Belvedere Castle Postcard…

Un de mes premiers tableaux…One of my first paintings…

En numérisant mes dernières diapositives de voyage, j’ai retrouvé les photos de quelques toiles faites là bas, un de mes premiers tableaux, j’étais à Vienne à ce moment là, prenant des cours de peinture, cela se place bien dans une conversation n’est-ce-pas…:), je m’étais inspiré du tableau de Gustav Klimt ‘Danae’ et aussi de la fontaine des quatre fleuves pour les personnages qui l’entourent…inspiré de Vienne et Rome….quoique je n’aie passé que quelques jours à Rome, et quelques mois à Vienne, parfois quelques mois restent gravés pour la vie…..:)

One of my very first painting, that I did found again on photo while I was scanning my last slides of that period, the original painting is still somewhere in  my studio….I should rephotograph again soon…but this one was inspired by Gustav Klimt ‘Danae’ and the fountain of the four rivers for the surroundings characters, my own interpretation, i guess I was influenced by being in Vienna at the time, nice thing to plug into a conversation…:), and also a bit influenced by Roma, been there a few days, a few month in Vienna, but sometimes a few months will leave a life long lasting impression on you…

Un parc quelque part à Vienne, honorant Amadeus Mozart…Ah Vienne tant de grands noms Mozart, Klimt, Schiele, Freud,  Schönberg, Otto Wagner et le Jugnestil et bien sûr Conchita Wurst…. trouver l’erreur….:O

Comme je suis arrivé un peu tard hier soir et que je travaille aujourd’hui, donc je n’ai rien de nouveau à montrer, alors je me suis dit que je pouvais modifier tout-de-même la page PHOTO sur wordpress, en y ajoutant des diaporamas pour Vienne et l’Italie, surtout Venise…cliquez sur PHOTO pour s,y rendre, la page…malheureusement pas Vienne ou Venise…

J’aurais pu ou du corriger la perspective, et puis non, je la laisse comme cela,, rien de bien particulier avec cette photo, si ce n’est que c’est photographié dans une ville où je ne me lasserais jamais de prendre des marches, appareil photo pas trop loin…

I could have corrected the perspective on this one, it is a bit, quite a bit tilted, but no, I’ve decided to let it as it is, and I can’t say there is something special about this photo, except that it was taken in a city where I could take endless walk anytime, the camera not too far away…..

A  l’occasion j’aime bien prendre une photo sur le vif, sans trop m’attarder à la composition, souvent dans le but de les utiliser comme fond de toile…celle-ci en est un exemple, photo prise sur une rue dont je ne me souviens plus de la localisation exacte, à Vienne, printemps 1987.

From time to time, I like photographying on the fly, street scene, not thinking much about composition or anything else, often I take them thinking I can fix it in photoshop, or working in the darkroom, many years ago….this is one of this type.

Je ne sais pas trop pourquoi, est-ce dû au numériseur, mais parfois j’ai des ombres ‘fantômes’ qui apparaissent, ici c’était vraiement un problème, il m’a fallu corriger, du mieux que je le pouvais ces zones…aussi bien sûr mes vieux négatifs poussiéreux demandent beaucoup de manipulations, il en reste encore ici…:), je pourrais fignoler le travail, mais je vais probablement garder l’image comme un arrière-plan possible d’un tableau….avec un modèle,  probablement un peu plus ‘glamour’…:)

I don’t know why, sometimes my scans show ‘ghost shadows’ it was the case here, I had to do a lot of retouching and manipulations, and still lot of speckles to clean up, I got a lot done but still some were missed…well later if I want too, or maybe I will just use it to inspire a new painting, with a model….a bit more ‘glamour’

Vienne a occupé une grande place dans mon voyage, j’y suis resté 4 mois au total, j’en parlerai plus longuement bien sûr lors de prochain article, donc voici une première photo, en noir et blanc, j’y suis arrivé fin novembre 1986, au moment où les touristes en général, laissent la ville de côté au profit de destinations plus ensoleillé…mais je viens du Québec, vécu 4 ans à Winnipeg, et travaillé dans l’arctique…alors le froid  ne m’effraie pas…:)

Vienna to me was a very special place during this trip, already when I left I know that I would spent some time there, did not think it would be 4 months…so a first pic from this City so dear to my hearth. I did arrive there november 26 th 1986, the first night it was foggy, misty and cool, very cool almost cold, but remember…I am from Montreal, lived in Winnipeg, one of the coldest city in Canada, and traveled to the Artic, so it wasn’t that cold…

 

On trouve de tout dans une rivière, même une chaise…you can find almost anything in a river, even a chair…

Belle fin-de-semaine, ensoleillé chaude….que j’ai passé en grande partie dans mon atelier, installé le climatiseur, outil essentiel pour le peintre plus adapté au froid qu’au chaud, que je suis….:) bon voilà pour la météo, maintenant voici la version finale de ce tableau, un autre de cette série de tableaux commencé voilà bien des années, donc méthodes différentes, médiums différents, dont du Liquin….qui pour moi n’a pas donné de bons résultats….la surface de ces tableaux étaient devenus tellement collante, ‘tacky’ en anglais….et extrêmement difficile à travailler, faut dire aussi que je les avais commencé à l’acrylique, et comme au cours des années, ma manière de peindre a changé un peu, et qu’en vieillissant, heu en avançant dans ma ‘carrière’….je suis devenu plus sensible au bon placement des éléments, avant je passais outre plusieurs erreurs de dessin, maintenant je le fais moins ou pas du tout…ce qui parfois coûte…en terme d’heures passées à corriger, et dans certains cas, amene une perte quant à la spontanéité du tableau…bon voilà pour le chapitre ‘histoire de l’art…enfin celle qui s’applique à moi…:), donc voilà les deux dernières versions, avant-hier et hier soir, enfin sur le coup de minuit aujourd’hui…ah minuit pour l’ajout de dramatique à cette signature…:) évidemment j’aurais pu la travailler encore des heures cette toile….

Beautiful week-end so far, hot, getting humid, sunny…week-end largely spent in my atelier….and installing my air cooler unit, essential tool for the more adapted to cooler temperature artist that I am, hot and humid would mean to me, no painting done….so there’s meteo wise part of this post…now finally got to the end of this painting, one of the few painting serie started many years ago, begun in acrylic, then tried other mediums, like liquin…did not work well for me, the canvas became so tacky, close to being unworkable…and many drawings errors, or plainly changing subject, some of these works span more than 7 years, a painter is getting older…oops more experienced…:) and ways of working change, earlier I would have preferred leaving drawing mistakes, or did not see them, than today, where I will often correct small errors, sometimes it is improving the painting, other times I almost lost them, and got them back…but the cost in hours is high and often a lost of spontaneity, so here’s for the art history aspect, at least my art history…:)

But this one I think is almost where I want it to be, of course I could have went again for hours, days…but I thought it was time to sign it….almost on midnight strike today…there’s for the ‘drama’….:)

Samedi soir tard….Saturday night, not live…but late….en fait dimanche matin tôt…in fact sunday morning very early…

Et vers minuit, en fait minuit plus une…dong, dong, dong….. It was a bit more than midnight, maybe one or two minutes…..dong dong dong…:)
Ouais faut dire qu’avec les horloges numériques et autres, ce n’est plus la même chose….:))
yeah I must say that with internet and electronic clock…no more sound effect…:))
